I was so busy on Saturday that I didn't get to bed until midnight, even though I knew I had to be up at 4am. Despite that amount of sleep, I managed to wake up at that hour. My intention was to arrive by/around 6am. Even though the tour doesn't start until about 8am, I wanted to get as close to the starting line this year as possible, hoping to avoid all the bottleneck/bike traffic that I am experienced with my first 2 Five Boro Bike Tours.
This outfit was really tricky to plan. I couldn't wear anything too amazing on my top half because the vest must be worn (there are checkpoints), so I did what I could. I modified it because:
a) it's ugly (seriously, this is not a secret)
b) I didn't want any straps interfering with the nice across-the-shoulder tan I intended on getting!
The rest of my outfit consists of:
- white tube top from Rainbow ($5ish)
- black skirt from Target ($10ish)
- fishnets from a shop on Manhattan Ave ($3)
- shoes from Payless ($20)
Sherry was already outside waiting for me. We left Greenpoint at 5:15am. It was pitch black as we rode south on Kent Ave through Williamsburg -
We made our way to DUMBO to take the Brooklyn Bridge to lower Manhattan. I love this bridge for its architecture (how could you not?!) and the stunning views, but I rarely bike over it because it's the most crowded, making for a very stressful ride. But at this time of morning, with so few people awake, it practically belonged to us. I mean seriously, how many times in your life do you get to ride over the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise?! This was amazing!

We arrived in lower Manhattan shortly before 6am which was exactly what I wanted! We made our way to where they other cyclists were already lined up and I was thrilled to see we were within a block of the starting line - perfect! Sure we would have to wait in this spot for about 2 hours before the tour began, but I knew it would pay off later.
With so much time to kill, we took some photos, talked to a few cyclists near us and I even had the opportunity to deflate a very annoying beach ball. (I don't know who thought it was a good idea to toss around a beach ball, but I assure you it was not me. Yes, I'm that person. The kind of person that doesn't need a beach ball hitting me in the head at 6:30am on a Sunday and will pop it when it lands near me...) Here are some photos from while we were waiting:

One pre-start highlight was running into a guy I know from Flickr, Ross (aka Karmapix). He has a great recumbent bike that he built himself. He described it to me as a "lawnchair on wheels". He wasn't kidding, look at this thing! (and in case you're wondering, yes, he completed the tour on this bike!)

Another highlight was seeing my favorite 7 Train subway conductor, Alex! You may remember him from last year's tour or from this blog post I wrote about him.
Finally around 8am we started moving up to the starting line to be released!
Here are some photos taken in our first boro, Manhattan:
We took the Madison Ave Bridge into our second borough, and my birthplace, the Bronx - (Christine, was that you waving to me just before that turn off? Sorry, I should have stopped! I realized after that I told you I would, sorry!)
If you sneeze during this portion of the tour, you miss the Bronx. Because we then promptly returned back to Manhattan via the 3rd Ave Bridge -
And from there we merge onto the FDR - one of my favorite parts of the tour! I love driving on this highway! Normally a cars only, tight, winding highway - it's the only time per year you get to cycle on it.
We exited the FDR at 63rd Street...
... to do another one of my favorite parts of the tour - the 59th St Bridge!!!
Again, this is the car portion of the road. Not the bike path I normally travel.
By my own guess, this is the steepest ramp in the tour. I was really looking forward to it because I love the challenge of it (and to be honest, I like passing people on a pink bike, with no gears, in high heels). Although the steepness hadn't changed (obviously), it wasn't nearly as tough as I had remembered. I guess I got more fit in the past year since I rode it! Go me!
I shot a little video on the 59th St Bridge:
We circled down the ramp past the Silvercup Studios sign...
...entering our 3rd borough, Queens:
Oh, speaking of Queens, another rider snapped this photo of me while riding through Queens. He then somehow tracked me down on Facebook to share it with me. Thank you, Hank!!
We approached the Astoria Park rest stop and had to walk our bikes through. It was at this point that I finally met blog reader, Diana!
This woman has been reading me for a while and we've been in touch on the interwebs and have even done a few events together but somehow have never run into each other... Until today. (Nice meeting you Diana, I apologize it was brief, I really wanted to get out of that rest area!) Oh and you can check out her recap blog on the bike tour, too!
We made our way out of the Astoria rest stop...
... and continued through Queens and at point, met these 2 characters. I can't remember our initial exchange with those 2 guys, but I called them "bad boys" for sneaking into the tour (they didn't have vests).

| I actually had the opportunity to use the line "Is that a banana in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?" to the guy on the left :) |
From LIC we take the Pulaski Bridge, whose name you may recognize from my blog because I mention it often. This bridge connects Queens to our 4th boro of the day, Brooklyn.
But not just any part of Brooklyn: Greenpoint Brooklyn! My beloved neighborhood!!! Represent! I love Greenpoint!!!
To make this part of the tour even more magical, we saw our friend Diana while on Franklin St. It's so awesome and unexpected to hear your name and have it be one of your friends who came out to see you. Thank you for your support, Diana!!
We rode through Greenpoint straight into Williamsburg, Brooklyn, another area I'm very familiar with (in fact, this is the same street we took to get to the Brooklyn Bridge a few hours earlier which was pitch black above). Once again I came up on, and passed, those 2 guys from Queens.
I shouted to the shirtless one: "What's it like getting passed by a girl on a pink bike with no gears?" (something I've *always* wanted to say to men that I pass) Without skipping a beat, he told me it was something he always dreamed of. He might just be my new boyfriend ;)
From there we hit DUMBO (if you're not from NY you may not know this, but that stands for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass - it's a section of Brooklyn. One of my favorites, in fact)
![]() |
| That famous view of the Manhattan Bridge that I take all the time, but this is the first time I took it from a speeding bike |
And took some pictures -
The BQE portion of the tour is a long one. As we rode along, I looked to my right at the bike & pedestrian path. It's a beautiful path - we bike along it during The NYC Century Tour. But even more importantly, I know that my pal Trixie runs along there. I thought "How cool would it be if I saw Trixie out for a run?" I continued riding, and occasionally looking over and taking pictures.
As I was taking pictures of my legs...
...I hear from an overpass "Sheryl!" I look up and lo and behold, it was Trixie!!! I couldn't believe she was up there and saw me! Since my camera was handy, I got a photo of her -
And this is the pic she had taken of me, taking a photo of her -
I can't even tell you how exciting that was! I had just been thinking about her and hoping I'd see her and sure enough I did - but not in the way I expected. Freaking awesome! I <3 that woman!!
We continued along the BQE towards the Verrazano Bridge...
We looped through some local roads in Brooklyn on our way to the bridge, finally making it to the entrance of the Verrazano. I couldn't believe it was nearly the end of the tour already!
I shot a little video at the start of the ramp too-
And here's a few pics taken on the span-
And all of a sudden we were over the bridge and in our 5th and final boro of the day: Staten Island!
At the end of that bridge is the festival. The unofficial end of the tour.
We made it to the festival shortly after noon. It took pretty much exactly 4 hours from the time we started. I had a quick bite, sent a few texts/tweets, and took a few photos -
![]() |
| Yes, I rode the whole tour in 4" heels. Yes, these are my official bike shoes. Yes, this is an outfit, not a 'costume'. Now please stop asking me these questions!!! |
Leaving the festival, Sherry and I checked out the 'scenic overlook' - it was scenic, but it came with a history lesson. History bores me to tears but my Dad would have loved it.
From there it was another few miles by bike to the Staten Island Ferry.
We got to Manhattan, and rode along the East River where I got some of my favorite shots of the day...
We made our way to the Williamsburg Bridge, which we rode back to Brooklyn.
I headed straight for my usual post-bike tour ritual bar, The Habitat. And ordered what else? Beer and french fries, or course! Meal of bike tour champions and glamour girls everywhere! Yummmmmm!
From there I went home and downloaded/uploaded my photos. Then I laid down for a nap around 4pm. And slept till 6am... which is one reason this blog didn't get posted on Sunday. Here are my heart rate stats for the day:

I love the 5 Boro Bike Tour! I had an AWESOME time. I just can't believe it went by so fast. Oh, and all day people were telling me they recognized me from the tour guide. Many even remembered/called me by name. And of course I got the usual questions a million times - about my shoes/outfit. Although I was disappointed that not a single person asked me if my bike had gears because I had a response I couldn't wait to use:
"Gears are for PU$$IES"Maybe I will get to use it at the next bike tour!
Before I go, since a few people inquired, this is what I ate this day:
- Before leaving the apartment I had a nectarine, coffee w/ soy and my usual vegan pumpkin pancakes.
- Waiting at the starting line, I had a coffee with soy.
- At the start of the tour I had a banana and a bagel.
- At some point along the way on the tour I had a vegan power bar.
- After the tour I had 1/2 a vegan turkey salad sandwich. I ate the other half at some point, maybe on the ferry. I can't remember.
- At the bar I had 2 pints of beer and an order of fries.
- When I got home I had more coffee with soy (in an attempt to stay awake - it didn't work) and a vegan chocolate tofu knish.
- I only drank about 8 glasses of water throughout the day. Not nearly enough considering all my activity.
And finally, my entire Flickr set can be seen here.

Haha...love the banana-in-the-pants joke! :) And your back looks amazing! It's hard to get a back like that. And more than 4 hours of biking? You go, girl! You're a rockstar! :)
ReplyDeleteSheryl, you are such an inspiration. I've been reading for awhile now, wishing I could get up the motivation to stop being lazy and fat and get my butt off the couch. I am happy to report that I'm finally getting it together. You're like the cool girl in high school that everyone wants to be like and I have you to thank for helping to get me on the right path. I even have my own pink bike, her name is "Lulu". :) I have a blog right now, but it's mostly about sewing. I'm thinking of starting a fitness/weight loss blog to map my journey, and to hopefully hit my goals. I just wanted to take the time to thank you for being you. Congrats on your tour.
ReplyDeleteCopleted it? When I was getting home, I saw your twitter feed that you had just gotten to the SI ferry!
ReplyDeleteANd you can see your sunburn progressing in the photos hehe. Next year use sunscreen and gears! Admit it, the Verrazano is a killer.
Ross, I assume that's you? For one thing, I was 1/2 hour later than I would have been due to stopping at the scenic overlook and a few other stops. I'd have been faster if I were alone and hadn't stopped at that historical thing. Secondly, the VN isn't that bad. Really. I would certainly not call it a killer.
ReplyDeleteI joined WW today!! Thank you so much for being so encouraging!
ReplyDeleteOh, and Ross, PS: Gears are for pussies! (finally I get to say it)
ReplyDeleteAnd I know, I had the sunscreen out and everything. It was just hard to put it on at 4am when I was chilly and it was pitch black outside. Stupid on my part. Next time. I promise!
Oh and when is the next ride you're doing? Century? Tour de InsertBoroughHere??
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the wonderful photos...I felt like I was along for the ride. I loved the tandem and coincidental co photo shots with Trixy! Love you/love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteWhat on earth is vegan turkey?
ReplyDeleteLike Penny on Big Bang Theory: "I'm a vegetarian. Except for steak. I loooove steak!"
Great pictures, Sheryl! Yes, that was me at the Madison Ave bridge -- no worries, will definitely be marshaling again at next year's 5BBT (and probably every other ride until then) and will see you then! You were so lucky to be at the front of the pack and have smooth sailing for the duration of the ride. As riding marshals, we wait for all 30,000 riders to pass us before we start the tour. As a result, we ended up standing on the BQE for two hours. I was watching your Twitter feed, so envious of your beer and fries! Glad you had a good time; the 5BBT's one of my favorite parts of living here.
ReplyDeleteoh cool! Iron man was there! :D
ReplyDeleteI love that you burst the annoying beach ball. I too am that person :-)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on another great bike ride.
Great post! Felt like I was along for the ride. I admire the joy and gusto with which you tackle the challenges.
ReplyDeleteBRAVA! (do you know how hard it is to type while giving a standing ovation?;) you are a total kick ass super heroine in the guise of a pin-up girl! loved all the great pics and sounds like you had a fantastic ride. oh and i can now officially say you're a "ball buster" LMFAO!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Can I just say how impressed I am that you can take photos/video while you're biking? You are far more coordinated that I could ever be!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe you're going to run the 5 boroughs in the marathon? And maybe it will be about the same amount of time (though of course only 26 miles). Too cool!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are moving to Brooklyn in June, I can't wait until next year's 5 Boro Bike Tour, we love riding. And thanks for the awesome pictures, it's nice to see the area and you make it look so fun!
ReplyDeleteSheryl you looked stunning! I was a hot mess during the ride by comparison :) Not nearly as fashionable! I rode the ride because I heard about it on your blog! We drove up from DC to do it. We had a BLAST - but were also in the back, which meant Astoria was cut off for us, and we were stuck on a part of the highway for an hour and a half just standing there. NEXT time we will get down there early too! Thank you for sharing your ride! xoxo
ReplyDeleteYou are simply amazing my friend! Just amazing! :) Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteHi Sheryl, been reading your blog for like 3 months now, very inspirational. You took some really cool pics during this tour, I loved your very feminine and stylish outfit you were the prettiest one out of the bunch!
ReplyDeletelove, Love, LOVE your adventures!!!! Go, girl!
ReplyDeleteGreat run down, thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou look so adorable riding around town! I love your bike and more importantly, your outfit - exactly how I prefer to ride my bike :) I also love that you finish it off with fries and a cold brew!
ReplyDeleteHey Sheryl! I had some friends mention the previous year they were standing behind a woman in heels n a pink bike....That's BitchCakes! I exclaimed. She's awesome and a local NYC celebrity. And I Know her! (my showoff moment) I had a killer time on the 59thst Bridge and the Verrazano but I kept remembering that you said you just keep pedaling until you get there. And I got there! Proud moment for me. Next year I WILL be at the front to skip the traffic jams and I WILL power through those uphills! You looked beautiful and happy. Glad to see streamers are back. They should make you Miss 5Boro!! See you at the T de BK
ReplyDelete<3 Natasha w the curls
Here is what I love about you.....
ReplyDeleteNo matter what size you are you always look GREAT. What I mean is that, I've been reading you for a while and even when you were bigger you still dressed the same. You're not one of those women (and not that there is anything wrong with it) that changed their look once they dropped a ton of weight.
I think that's what is so captivating. You ooooooze confidence, big or small! :o)
Keep it up, you make me feel lazy when I thought I was pretty active LOL I clearly have a lot more work to do.
Cheers!
BITCH-CAM MOBILE! I LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteWow, this has some very similar elements to the NYC Marathon - cannot WAIT for you to conquer these roads on FOOT, mama!
Congrats again :)
XO
I've never posted before but I wanted to let you know that you inspired me, at 29 years old, to learn to ride a bike. I'd always been to scared after getting hit by a car trying to learn when I was 5 (got a concussion). So last weekend, at a pre-mother's day retreat with my mom I learned to ride. I am now the proud owner of a 1950s Schwinn, she's called a Pink Lady, needs a new paint job and, as my husband lovingly pointed out a kids bike, but she's mine and when it stops raining here in Oregon, I shall ride her proundly to work
ReplyDeleteAmazing pics and story! Some day I must see NY. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI still can't believe I caught you! Those are great shots too!
ReplyDeleteI had so much fun watching everyone go by that I'm contemplating doing this next year. I hope they resolve the issues the other riders were complaining about because I'd be at the back of the pack and wouldn't want to deal with all that.
Otherwise, how do you feel about attaching a sidecar and taking me along? We can wear matching helmets and old Italian lady housecoats...
Congrats on another great 5 Boro Bike Tour! One of these years I'd love to get up there and participate. You look fabulous, as usual! Where did you get your helmet?? I love it! Did you buy a regular one and cover it or did it come like that? I wish I was 1/2 as stylish as you when I'm NOT working out :-)
ReplyDeleteEvery time you write these awesome biking posts I suddenly want to fix up my bike and go riding on the weekends. North Vegas isn't nearly as awesome as NYC to bike around, but I really want to start doing it. I haven't been biking for 12-13 years (when I was 11-12 years old).
ReplyDeleteThank you for this beautiful post. I really feel like i'm getting to know the city through you, and it's fun. Really love the fact that you appreciate the old buildings and signs. I so wish I could visit New York with a guide like you who knows her way around.
ReplyDeleteIt's so amazing to me whenever you just run into someone you know in that huge megopolis. Wonderous.
You are so funny! Anyone who asks if it's a costume doesn't "know" you very well. They need to hang out here more.
Wow! Looks like you had fun!
ReplyDeleteWhat I am most impressed about is that you did it in full glamour girl couture.
I would end up with a severe case of chafing and red lippy from left eyebrow to right cheek, and my white top would be filthy.
RESPECT. REPRESENT!
I looked for you at the 5 Boro Bike Tour Bitch Cakes! I even overheard people talking about you from last year and your outfit as I rode by them. I've never met you but I've seen you all around lower east Manhattan and in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Sometimes I just see your bike. Every time I always pull annoyingly on my boyfriend's arm and say there she is! Or there's her bike, she must be nearby! We stumbled across your website when we were looking for tips for riding the Bike Tour. I couldn't believe it! Finally, I've found you! You are an inspiration, and your site is amazing. I love reading it. Next time I see you around, I'm going to march right up to you and ask if we can be friends.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome day and tour - looks so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteVery inspiring!! You go girl!! New follower :)
ReplyDelete- passthecayennepepper.com
Awesome!!! I am a new(ish) follower - I just bought myself a pretty pink bike! I love the fact that you did all this in high heels and a skirt. You ROCK!!!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading more of your adventures!

ReplyDeleteso beautiful place really.
What an incredible experience. I just can't get over how fabulous you look doing a bike tour! A true inspiration for all who love fitness, adventures, and glamour!
ReplyDeleteOh, BC, it's been a while since I've stopped by your blog, but this post reminds me why I love ya, I love ya, I love ya!!! You are such a cheerful inspiration! Love it!
